greetings, word lovers:.
in my job, i work with words and wrangle them into shape, well, in a manner of speaking.
one word might be mistaken for another, a word with either a similar or identical sound.
hubris: excessive pride or self-confidence
overweening
ok, so i've just put myself through another months broadcast so i can see what bull they're feeding my still in relatives.
all was going fine... well, i say fine, i mean the usual cheesy videos, rehearsed reactions from jeffrey jackson (you remember him, the one who told half truths and lies at the royal commission) and propaganda from jw land.. the last feature brings up 9/11 and the paris 2015 attack at the bataclan.
just as im thinking "how are they gonna spin this in their direction" i hear these words:.
Years ago, some JW friends were mushroom hunting when the meeting was, as usual, scheduled. They made some poor choices with the fungi and got deathly ill. Don't know when they actually ate them, but they did miss the meeting.
You can guess what they were told: "If you had been at the meeting . . .

I was away from home but saw your posts on a view-only screen where I was staying. Couldn't wait to get home and tell you that a waitress and I were talking hot sauces. I learned "wasabi."
"Noisome" is a disagreeable word I learned in an SF short story. No relation to matters auditory.
"Reet": You find such excellent words!
this thread is inspired by a beloved poster who said he managed to sleep all through yesternight.. how about you, do you sleep through the night?.
each morning, around 2 am, it's as if a hand shakes me awake.. i became accustomed to arising at that time to take care of my semi-invalid mother.. she passed nearly 12 years ago, but my body?
mind?
Thanks, Syl!
I wrote recently about us guys needing to keep doctors appointments.
My dosage increase in male-related meds has helped, yet I still get up 3 or 4 times a night, which is an improvement. That's why sleeping through last night was so cool. I cannot even recall my dreams, which is unusual for me, a florid dreamer.
i was just thinking about old school effects and cgi (computer generated imagery) in film.
first off, cgi is certainly an advancement in technology, in what can or can't be portrayed on screen.. my knowledge of films and film-making is by no means extensive.
it's just i feel that sometimes film-makers rely too much on cgi, assume that more cgi = better film, or assume it's better to use cgi in every instance.. take a nightmare on elm street (1984).
Greetings, LoveUniHateExams:
I grew up with the FX of the '50s.
Forbidden Planet, which had a designer from Disney, I recall, did the monster of the ID scene. It was nominated for an AA but lost to The Ten Commandments. Then, there was Ray Harryhausen with stop-action motion. (Is that what's it's called?) Clash of the Titans, Jason and the Argonauts.
As for new blockbusters -- yawnfest. I really get bored with one superhero slamming another into a skyscraper and vice versa. Losing the city's beautiful skyline is a travesty. Arrival, with minimal but superbly effective, understated visual treats, is about story and character. Suggest terror and mystery. Hitchcock said suspense trumped over surprise. You can figure that one out, I'm sure!
An excellent and favorite subject for me, LUHE!
Thanks!
